NEW DELHI: The Congress on Saturday picked Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, a four-time MLA from Himachal Pradesh and head of the party’s election committee, as the next chief minister of the hill state.
The oath ceremony will take place on Sunday at 11am. Sukhu beat out other heavyweights such as state Congress chief Pratibha Singh and leader of the opposition in the outgoing assembly Mukesh Agnihotri. Sources said that Sukhu had the support of at least 25 of the 40 newly elected Congress MLAs.
“I am thankful to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and the people of the state. Our government will bring change. It is my responsibility to fulfil the promises we made to the people of Himachal Pradesh. We have to work for the development of the state,” said CM-designate SS Sukhu.
Who is Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu?
He was the campaign committee chairman in the recently concluded assembly polls.
Sukhu, 58, won from the Nadaun constituency, defeating BJP’s Vijay Kumar by 3,300 votes.
Sukhu has contested five elections and won four so far.
He contested his first election in 2003 and won.
He was elected again in 2007 but suffered a defeat in 2012.
He was elected again in 2017 and now in 2022.
He was the state Congress president from 2013 to 2019.
Sukhu began his career in student politics when he joined the National Student Union of India.
He was elected president of its state unit in 1989.
Between 1998-2008, Sukhvinder also served as the president of the state Youth Congress.
He has a degree in law.
Sukhu was elected twice as councilor of the Municipal Corporation of Shimla between 1992 and 2002.
He was appointed secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee in 2008. Sukhu was an outspoken critic of six-time CM Virbhadra Singh.
